Our Team

Barbara is a seasoned grant maker with more than twenty years of experience in social change philanthropy in the areas of K-12 education and youth development. During her twelve-year tenure as president of the Edward W. Hazen Foundation, Barbara developed and implemented a highly effective funding strategy that established the Hazen Foundation as a leader among education and youth development funders.

In addition to developing administrative systems, processes and procedures to strengthen Hazen’s operations, Barbara supported two successive board chairs in the development of policies, procedures, and learning opportunities that enhanced board effectiveness. Most recently, as consultant and Special Projects Officer at The New York Community Trust, Barbara developed the funding strategy for the Brooke Astor Fund for New York City Education, a five-year, 40-million dollar fund established by the New York Attorney General. She was also instrumental in the creation of the Trust’s South Bronx Healthy and Livable Neighborhoods Program, and the Leadership Fellows Program for mid-level managers at Baruch College. In the broader field of philanthropy, Barbara played a central role in the creation of a number of celebrated funding collaboratives, including the Funders Collaborative for Youth Organizing, and the Funders Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities. Over the past ten years, as Affiliate Consultant with the Support Center for Nonprofit Management and as an independent consultant, Barbara has supported nonprofit and philanthropic organizations with strategic planning, program development, meeting and retreat facilitation.
